LOW SHAO SUAN

Collaborative Pianist

Low Shao Suan is a pianist, accompanist, composer, songwriter and music arranger from Singapore. A graduate of the famed École Normale de Musique de Paris in France, she has performed as soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), the Singapore Festival Orchestra, the European Baroque Ensemble in Portugal, and the Hunan Symphony Orchestra in China. In July 2012, her CD recording of Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals with the SSO was released.


As a piano accompanist and chamber musician, Shao Suan has worked with musicians from all over the world, such as violinist SIOW Lee Chin, double bassist Jeff BRADETICH, flautist Davide FORMISANO, saxophonist Claude Delangle, trumpetist Joe BURGSTALLER, and tubist Øystein BAADSVIK, just to name a few. In 2002, she was appointed by the National Arts Council (NAC) as one of two official accompanists for the Erhu Open Category in the National Chinese Music Competition, and in 2003, she was the rehearsal accompanist for world-renowned violinist, Sarah CHANG. She was also a piano accompanying staff at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, NUS, from 2005 to 2017.


An avid songwriter and composer, Shao Suan has had a few of her songs sung by various Asian pop singers such as Mink (Japan), CHEN Yi Yi (Malaysia) and Vivian HSU (Taiwan). A number of her original instrumental compositions have won international awards such as “Honourable Mention Award” at the 12th USA Songwriting Competition in 2007 for her solo piano work, July Rendez-Vous, and “Runner Up” at the 2009 UK Songwriting Contest for another solo piano composition, Still. In 2015, Sweet Dreams for flute, oboe and piano won 3rd Prize (Category B) at the International Composition Competition “Maurice Ravel” in Bergamo, Italy. A year later, her solo piano composition, Nocturne in D flat, was one of top 8 finalists out of 345 works from 37 countries at the Sixth Composition Competition for Piano Fidelio in Spain. Shao Suan and her twin sister, Shao Ying, released “Romance in the City” and “Music Diaries”, two instrumental albums featuring their original works, in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
